A lesson on domination from the little guy!

Loved the old flat top!

Loved the old flat top!

6′1 and 19 year old rookie Brandon Jennings scored 55 points against the Warriors this week, setting a new record for rookie high scoring.

What is remarkable about this dominating show? 21 points were from 3’s, the rest of his points? Simple, solid short range shots. He bagged an additional 34 points on boring mid range shots, and a handful of lay ins.

Check out the performance here:

As someone who spends their life teaching players to move more explosively and jump higher, I’d love to say that’s what got Jennings this performance.  While his first step is a definite asset to him, and scored him a handful of points, his real weapon this night was his shot, and short range jumper.

We get so focused working on the 3 ball, and the dunk that we forget just how DEVASTATING a deadly accurate short range jumper can be.

The best thing about being a great shooter (aside form the high scores) is that it begins to afford you highlight dunks.   If you can drop the jumper all day, your defender starts jumping.  Which means that a pump fake is going to give you a chance to make the highlight reel!

The lesson is this:

Practice your short range run of the mill shots. Master your short range run of the mill shots.

IF I could throw in a couple of tips here:

  • Practice game speed, or don’t practice at all!  You will never shoot a “casual” shot in a game, so don’t shoot one in practice, a game speed shot and a casual shot are 2 completely different shots
  • Again… Ever wonder why you don’t shoot in a game the way you shoot in practice?  Because a game speed shot is different than your relaxed practice shot.
  • Focus on perfect consistent form, then the shots WILL fall IF you put the practice in.
  • Record how many shots you take.
  • Check out my shooting interviews in the Jump Manual bonus section if you have not already, they are amazing!  Seriously, game changing stuff.

I like this Jennings kid.  His humility is extremely apparent and charming.  It’s the kind of humility that could lead him to continue to learn and progress his game.  It’s tough to be that young (19) and lead grown men who are twice your size!  LeBron did it, which is amazing, but Lebron is also 6′8 250+ pounds of man, even if he was only 19.

Check out the interview to get a flavor for this baller’s personality:
